Court documents from a copyright lawsuit revealed that Anthropic ran a secretive “Project Panama” in which they acquired millions of used, physical books; sliced off their spines with hydraulic cutters; high-speed scanned the pages; and discard the originals. It was all to train its Claude AI models.
The internal memo called it an effort “to destructively scan all the books in the world” while keeping the operation quiet. Critics compared the irreversible loss of physical volumes to the ancient Library of Alexandria’s destruction, when irreplaceable knowledge vanished forever.
A judge ruled the buy-and-destroy method fair use because the books were legally purchased and the digital copies stayed internal. But have we entered a modern-day Fahrenheit 451, where owning books is banned and “firemen” work to burn them? Are we actually losing our own history to AI?
